About Heart Center Birth & Wellness

Connect, Empower, Support.

Birthwork is activism: We are creating an environment of trust in a safe space, on each family’s own terms.

Birthwork is community work: We are creating a circle of support for Southwest Wisconsin families throughout the childbearing year.

Hello, and welcome to Heart Center Birth & Wellness. I am a midwife apprentice, postpartum doula, and licensed massage therapist. I am passionate about holding support around the transformational right-of-passage that is pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Heart Center Birth & Wellness is named for the motherwort plant, whose powerful healing properties soothe our emotional and physical hearts. She is an emblem for the loving care I offer my community.

If you desire to birth in the comfort of your own home, in power and autonomy, with skilled and knowledgeable care, then you’ve come to the right place.

My mission is to provide inclusive, respectful, and collaborative birth services, guided by the values of trust, dignity and integrity. I hold a safe space for all families, and am welcoming to those of all faiths, backgrounds and identities. You’ll have full autonomy and informed consent — I’m here to support you in your wishes and vision for your birth and postpartum.

I also specialize in prenatal and postpartum massage therapy, to help you feel your very best before and after the birth of your baby. Massage services are available now, not only to pregnant and postpartum mothers, but to anyone who would like to experience the benefits of therapeutic massage in the comfort of your own home. Would you like beautiful, memorable placenta prints? I also offer placenta encapsulation and art. View the services page for full details.

Meet the Midwife

MELISSA MOSS, MIDWIFE APPRENTICE, LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPIST

Hi, I’m Melissa. I first felt awe and appreciation of the natural birth process when I observed my best friend’s birth in the late 90’s ( not counting my pet cat’s birth of seven kittens!). I knew I wanted to be a midwife after watching my friend have a natural and safe birth by instinctively following her body’s rhythms. However, at that time there was not an option to be a homebirth midwife in Wisconsin, so I opted instead for an career in alternative health. I specialized in massage therapy and bodywork for many years, and had some other fun healthcare adventures along the way.

When I became pregnant in 2014 and had my first child in the traditional hospital system, my midwifery calling became re-ignited. I personally experienced what many do in industrialized birth: a lack of real education for pregnant mothers and families during their visits, lack of autonomy in the mother’s experience, a lack of allowing by hospitals for true physiologic birth, and women being de-centered from their own birth experience. I knew it didn’t have to be this way; I knew that birthing with dignity was possible and that women and families can thrive with the proper education and support. My experience became the catalyst to answer my calling to birthwork.

I was thrilled to discover the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) path, which allowed me to apprentice with several midwives in Wisconsin, Iowa and Pennsylvania since 2019. I learned through experience the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the kind of care I would want for myself or my own daughter.

I plan to complete my CPM certification in early 2025, at which point I’ll begin booking my own homebirth clients. I currently offer postpartum doula services, professional massage therapy, placenta encapsulation and placenta art, and I’m attending births as an apprentice with other licensed midwives. I look forward to supporting you and your family through the childbearing year.
